Nitrogen in Tyres: Is It Worth It?

You'll see nitrogen tyre inflation offered at some garages, sometimes for a fee. So is it actually worth it for an everyday car? Here's the honest answer.

Updated July 20264 min read

The honest answer

  • Ordinary air is already about 78% nitrogen
  • Nitrogen leaks slightly slower and carries less moisture
  • For everyday road cars the benefit is marginal
  • You still need to check your pressures regularly either way

What's the idea behind nitrogen?

The pitch is that nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they escape through the tyre more slowly, keeping pressures more stable for longer. Nitrogen is also dry, so there's less moisture inside the tyre to cause corrosion or pressure swings with temperature.

The reality for road cars

All true in principle - but the everyday difference is small. The air we breathe (and that a normal compressor puts in your tyres) is already around 78% nitrogen, so switching to pure nitrogen is a change at the margins. Your tyres will still lose a little pressure over time, and you'll still need to check them. Nitrogen's real advantages show up in motorsport, aircraft and heavy haulage - not the school run.

Is it worth paying for?

For most drivers, no. If it's offered free with a fitting, there's no harm in it. But it's not worth going out of your way or paying a premium for - and it certainly isn't a reason to stop checking your pressures.

The one thing that always matters

Whatever's in your tyres, the thing that actually keeps you safe and saves you fuel is the correct pressure, checked regularly. A £5 gauge and five minutes a month beats any gas.

“Honestly? Don't lose sleep over it. Whatever's in your tyres, the thing that keeps you safe and saves you fuel is checking your pressures once a month. Nitrogen won't do that for you.”

Frequently asked questions

Is nitrogen better than air in tyres?

Marginally - it leaks a little slower and is drier. But normal air is already about 78% nitrogen, so for road cars the difference is small.

Is nitrogen in tyres worth paying for?

For most everyday drivers, no. It's fine if it's free, but it isn't worth a premium and it doesn't replace regular pressure checks.

Can I mix nitrogen and normal air?

Yes - topping a nitrogen-filled tyre up with ordinary air is perfectly safe.

Do I still need to check pressures if I use nitrogen?

Absolutely - nitrogen slows pressure loss slightly but doesn't stop it. Check monthly either way.
