Caravan & Motorhome Tyre Pressure Guide

Caravan and motorhome tyres work hard - heavy, often near their limit, and frequently sat still for months. Getting the pressures right, and knowing when to replace them, is what keeps a trip from ending on the hard shoulder.

The essentials

  • Caravan and motorhome pressures depend on the actual axle load, not just the tyre size
  • Check the maker's handbook or the tyre manufacturer's load/pressure tables
  • Pressures are usually higher than a car's
  • Replace caravan tyres by around 5-7 years even with tread left - they perish standing

Why caravan and motorhome pressures are different

Unlike a car, a caravan or motorhome often runs close to its maximum weight, and that weight sits on the tyres for long periods. Too little pressure lets the tyre flex and overheat under load - the single biggest cause of a blowout. So correct pressure here isn't just about wear; it's a genuine safety issue.

How to find the correct pressure

Start with the handbook and the weight plate, which give the recommended pressures for the loaded weight. Tyre manufacturers also publish load/pressure tables: you find your axle weight (ideally by weighing the loaded outfit at a weighbridge) and read off the correct pressure for that load. If in doubt, set to the maker's figure for maximum load.

Check cold, before every trip

Always check when the tyres are cold, and do it before you set off on a trip rather than mid-journey - the same rule as any tyre (see our tyre pressure guide).

The age issue caravanners forget

Because caravans spend most of the year parked, the tyres usually have plenty of tread but are quietly perishing - the rubber hardens and cracks with age and UV. Many manufacturers recommend replacing caravan tyres at around 5 to 7 years regardless of tread. Check the age from the date code on the sidewall (see how long do tyres last?).

We come to you

We supply and fit caravan and motorhome tyres at your home or storage site - handy for a heavy outfit you'd rather not drive to a garage on ageing tyres.

“Caravan tyres are the ones people forget - loads of tread but six years old and cracking because the van's sat all winter. Get them checked before the season, and don't guess the pressures; they're weight-based and usually higher than you'd think.”

Frequently asked questions

What pressure should caravan or motorhome tyres be?

It depends on the axle load, not just the tyre size. Use the handbook or the tyre maker's load/pressure tables for your loaded weight - it's usually higher than a car.

Why are caravan tyre pressures higher than a car's?

Because they carry heavy loads close to their limit. Correct (usually higher) pressure stops the tyre flexing and overheating.

How often should caravan tyres be replaced?

Around every 5-7 years even if the tread looks fine, because the rubber perishes with age while the caravan is parked.

Do you fit caravan tyres at a storage site?

Yes - we come to your home or storage site to fit caravan and motorhome tyres.
