You don't need any special kit to check your tyres are legal - just a 20p coin and thirty seconds. Here's how to do the 20p test, and how to measure tread more precisely.
In the UK the minimum legal tread depth for cars is 1.6mm, across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around its entire circumference. Drive on less and you risk a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points - per tyre. Most experts recommend replacing at 3mm, because wet braking distances grow sharply below that. (See our full UK tyre law guide.)

The 20p test is a great quick check, but for an exact reading a tread depth gauge is better - they cost only a few pounds. Push the probe into the main grooves and read off the depth in millimetres. Anything approaching 1.6mm needs replacing soon; we'd suggest acting at 3mm.
Wear isn't always even, so don't just check one spot. Measure across the width of the tyre (inner, middle and outer) and at several points around it. Uneven wear - more on one edge than the other - can point to incorrect pressure or an alignment issue worth getting looked at.
“Keep a 20p in the door pocket and check once a month - it takes seconds. If that outer band's showing, don't gamble on it: the fine is £2,500 a tyre, and more importantly your stopping distance in the wet is badly reduced.”

1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference.
Insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If you can see the coin's outer band, your tread may be below the legal limit and should be checked.
At least once a month, and before any long journey.
It's a reliable quick check. For an exact reading in millimetres, use an inexpensive tread depth gauge.
