Best Budget Tyres: How to Choose

"The best budget tyre" isn't a single product - the right one depends on your car, your mileage and where you drive. Here's how to pick a budget tyre that's genuinely good value, not just cheap.

How to judge a budget tyre

  • Check the EU tyre label - especially the wet-grip rating
  • A well-known "premium budget" brand usually beats an unbranded bargain tyre
  • Match the correct size, load index and speed rating for your car
  • Independent tests (Auto Express, TyreReviews) are the best guide to real performance

Are budget tyres a false economy?

Not necessarily. For lower-mileage drivers, older cars and second cars, a good budget tyre is a sensible, road-legal choice. But independent testing consistently shows premium tyres stop shorter in the wet and last longer, so on a high-mileage or family car it can pay to step up. (More on that on our budget tyres page.)

Read the EU tyre label

Every new tyre carries an EU label rating three things: fuel efficiency, wet grip and external noise, each on an A-to-E-style scale. For safety, the one to prioritise is wet grip - the gap between an A and an E wet-grip tyre can be several car lengths in an emergency stop. A budget tyre with a strong wet-grip rating is a very different thing to a bargain-bin tyre with a poor one.

Look at independent tests

Publications like Auto Express and TyreReviews run annual budget-tyre tests that rank real models on wet and dry braking, handling and wear. They repeatedly show that a respected "mid-tier budget" brand can massively outperform the cheapest unbranded options - so a quick look before you buy is well worth it.

Match your car's spec

Whatever you choose, it must be the correct size and carry at least the load index and speed rating your car needs - see our speed rating and load index guide.

“There's budget and there's cheap, and they're not the same. A decent budget brand with a good wet-grip label can be great value; the bargain-bin unbranded stuff is where you're really gambling. Tell us your car and your budget and we'll fit the best tyre for the money.”

Frequently asked questions

What are the best budget tyres?

There's no single answer - it depends on your car. Check the EU tyre label wet-grip rating and independent test results, and favour a respected budget brand over an unbranded bargain tyre.

Are budget tyres safe?

Yes - any budget tyre sold in the UK must meet the same minimum legal and safety standards as any new tyre. Wet-grip performance still varies, so check the label.

What should I look for in a budget tyre?

A strong wet-grip rating on the EU label, good independent test scores, a reputable brand, and the correct size, load index and speed rating for your car.

Budget or premium - which should I buy?

Budget can be great value for lower-mileage or older cars; premium stops shorter in the wet and lasts longer, so it often pays off on high-mileage and family cars.
